We hope you will join us for the 2026 LER book discussion as we tackle Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World by David Epstein.
In this book, you will be challenged to consider the common notion that children should specialize early or risk being "left behind." Contrary to the "10,000 hours" rule, Epstein argues that in a complex, unpredictable world, it is the generalists—those who sample widely, take detours, and embrace experimentation—who are primed to excel. We invite you to read Epstein's book and interact with his ideas as well as consider how Mason's philosophy might speak into the debate.
LER readers are always thoughtful and prepared - you won’t want to miss this book or discussion!

On Friday afternoon, attendees have the option of attending a Discussion Group. These are groups of 15 or less and are casual discussions on a wide variety of topics that the leader is passionate about. Participants may choose a Discussion Group to attend when they arrive at the retreat. 2026 Discussion Group info coming soon!
